A Transformative Weekend
Peace and blessings!
This past weekend, The Growth Spot team set off on a transformative journey from the streets of Phoenix to our land near St Johns, Arizona. Our mission? To strengthen bonds, tackle hands-on projects, and deepen our connection with the land that’s central to our vision.
The Journey Begins
Our adventure started with a shocking contrast between Phoenix’s intense heat and northern Arizona’s chilly embrace, complete with a mesmerizing curtain of fog and thick snow on red rock mesas. The beauty of Arizona’s landscape never ceases to amaze, reminding us of how blessed we are to have land ownership in this region. In Show Low, AZ, we stopped to gather supplies, gearing up for a significant day of work on our property. Despite occasional concerns about being newcomers (and let’s keep it real… people of color) in rural areas, we were met with nothing but kindness. From the friendly talks at Home Depot with other patrons to the welcoming conversation at a local Circle K, the warmth of small-town hospitality was reassuring, and we felt the love.
A Test of Resilience
Our journey took an unexpected turn when we approached our property. The recent rains had transformed the typically firm dirt roads into a challenging maze of mud and sand. As we ascended a sandy hill, one of our vehicles became stuck in the muck, its wheels spinning fruitlessly and sinking deeper with each attempt to free it.
Undeterred, the team sprang into action, pooling our collective knowledge and resources in an attempt to resolve the situation. We scavenged for sticks and rocks from the surrounding area, using them as makeshift levers and traction aids under the vehicle’s wheels. Despite our efforts and MacGyver hacks, the vehicle stubbornly settled deeper into the mud.
To add salt to injury, it began to rain and hail. The elements beat down on us, testing our resolve as much as our physical efforts. It was in this moment of shared challenge, as we huddled together discussing our next move, that an unexpected ally appeared.
A local resident, driving a truck (that just so happened to have a tow hitch, straps and traction boards), noticed our situation. With a friendly wave and a confident smile, he asked if we could use some help. Without hesitation, he jumped into action and got wet in the rain with the rest of us trying to solve the challenge. He eventually maneuvered his truck to pull our vehicle free from the muddy grip. His timely intervention not only salvaged our vehicle but also reinvigorated our spirits.
T-Money Saves the Day
Later, we learned that this man, who we affectionately named T-Money, is one of our neighbors. He said that he rarely visits his property on the weekends, but he had an urge to go ‘hang out’ on his property and that he was happy to be in a position to help us at that moment. T-Money’s arrival was a big reminder of the spontaneous friendships that can emerge in challenging times, and the community spirit that thrives even in the most remote areas. Thanks to his help, and the renewed spirit it brought us, the sun reappeared both literally and metaphorically, allowing us to continue our mission with a story of resilience and unexpected kindness.
Mission Accomplished:
With the vehicle free and the sun breaking through the clouds, we turned our attention to the fencing. The rain had softened the ground just enough to allow us to complete our task more efficiently than anticipated. Not only did we finish the fencing, but we also managed to level all the previously laid fencing, turning a potential setback into a significant stride forward.
Exploring and Expanding:
Energized by our earlier success, we ventured to locate the well site, an essential component for our next major project to plant a perimeter of citrus trees. As we navigated through the terrain, we discovered a substantial rainwater tank, brimming over from the recent downpours.
With the well finally located, we strategized on how best to harness this vital resource. Our discussions centered on creating an efficient water delivery system that would not only nourish the trees but also support the broader ecological balance of the area. We also noted a local water delivery vendor that could be a solution.
While exploring, a few of us stumbled upon an unexpected and heartwarming sight—a trio of joyful black and brown children playing in front of an RV. We pulled over and approached as their laughter drew us closer, and one of the boys excitedly asked ‘Hey! Do you know our dad?’. We introduced ourselves to the family and made an immediate connection. Learning that we had neighbors nearby who shared similar backgrounds and were receptive infused our mission with an even greater sense of purpose and community spirit. Our successful exploration and the relationships fostered during this visit were pivotal in solidifying our resolve to create a nurturing and productive environment at The Growth Spot.
Evening Reflections:
The day ended as we gathered around a bonfire, fishing rods in hand, barbeque sizzling beside us. It was during our bonfire cyphers that we brainstormed our next moves. This reflective time was not only about planning but about celebrating our achievements and the lessons learned—gratitude for our blessings, openness to kindness, and the importance of preparation.
